Triethylene glycol is a bifunctional alcohol and a colorless, odorless and non-flammable liquid, also known as TEG and chemical formula C6H14O4. This product is offered under the brand name KETEG by AG Chemical Industries today. This material has a high viscosity and boiling point and is soluble in water. Triethylene glycol is the third member of the bifunctional alcohol series and is produced along with mono and diethylene glycol as a side product of the direct hydration reaction of ethylene oxide. TEG is preferably used in cases that require a higher boiling temperature and lower volatility than diethylene glycol. KETEG is soluble in ethanol, acetone, acetic acid, glycerin, pyridine and aldehydes, slightly soluble in diethyl ether and insoluble in oil, fat and most hydrocarbons.
This material is used as a plasticizer in vinyl polymers and in the production of air disinfectants and other products. Triethylene glycol is known for its ability to absorb high moisture and increasing dehydration from natural gas.
